Today was all about harnessing LinkedIn.

This is one of the great things about Networking... you have this wealth of talent at your fingertips and all sorts of experts that are willing to share their knowledge.

So today's teacher/trainer was Lauren Spencer (you can find her here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lauren-spencer-uk/) and what a jam packed 90 minute session that was! I filled out 6 pages of notes and she even sent through other print outs after the session too.

Let's be honest, when we think of social media, vibrant images of Instagram, witty tweets from X (formerly Twitter), and the endless scroll of TikTok videos (mainly of me having a breather from my morning run) often spring to mind. LinkedIn, with its professional headshots and business jargon, often feels like the quiet, serious cousin relegated to the back of the family gathering. It's perceived as the "boring" platform, the place you only dust off when you're job hunting. But, thanks to Lauren, this perception couldn't be further from the truth. LinkedIn is misunderstood, not inferior.

The Misconceptions:

  • It's Just for Job Seekers: This is the most common misconception. While LinkedIn is undeniably powerful for career advancement, its utility extends far beyond job searches. It's a hub for industry insights, networking, and thought leadership.

  • It's Stiff and Formal: Yes, professionalism is key, but that doesn't equate to stuffiness. Engaging content, personal stories (within reason), and even a touch of humour can thrive on LinkedIn.

  • It's All About Self-Promotion: While self-promotion plays a role, genuine engagement and value-driven content are what truly resonate. Building relationships and sharing expertise should be the focus.

  • It's Not "Fun": "Fun" is subjective. If you define fun as connecting with like-minded professionals, learning about industry trends, and expanding your network, LinkedIn can be incredibly fulfilling.

I have already put some of the tips and tools to good use in my own LinkedIn profile... but I still have a bit more to do until I am completely happy... I have Lauren's standards to live up to now!
